Starting and joining discussions
How the discussion area works, how to start a thread that gets replies, and the ground rules.
This article is for members of an organisation that uses Portava.
The Discussions area is the open conversation of your portal. It is for questions, recommendations, and the kind of knowledge that never makes it into a formal guide.
Reading and replying
Discussions are organised into categories set by your organisation. Open any thread to read it and reply in the text box. Replies appear immediately, and the person you replied to is notified.
If a thread is useful but you have nothing to add, save it for later.
Starting a new thread
Pick the category that fits. Give the thread a title that is the actual question, such as "Can anyone recommend a payroll provider?" rather than "Question". Add enough detail for someone to answer on first reading.
Threads with a specific, answerable title get replies. Vague ones sink. If you are unsure which category fits, choose the closest. Moderators can move threads.
The ground rules
Discussions are member-to-member, but they are moderated. Your organisation sets the community guidelines, and its moderators can edit or remove posts that breach them.
In short, disagree with ideas rather than people. Do not post advertising dressed up as advice. And assume the person you are replying to will be at the next event you attend, because they probably will.
