Sending direct messages
How to message another member privately, and how message notifications reach you.
This article is for members of an organisation that uses Portava.
Not every conversation belongs in an open thread. Direct messages let you contact another member privately, often after a discussion reply or a directory search.
Starting a conversation
From a member's profile in the directory, use the message option to write to them directly. The conversation is private between the two of you and stays in your messages area, so you do not need to hunt through email for what was said.
A good first message says who you are and why you are getting in touch. It is the same courtesy you would use when introducing yourself at an event.
Managing notifications
You are notified of new messages in the portal, and by email if your notification settings allow it. A message reaches you even if you have not signed in for a while.
If the email reminders are too much, adjust them under Settings. The messages themselves always wait for you in the portal.
If something is not right
Direct messages are covered by the same community guidelines as everything else. If you receive something that crosses a line, do not reply. Report it to your organisation, who can act on it.
