Managing discussions
Setting up discussion categories, seeding early conversation, and moderating with a light but visible touch.
This article is for the administrators who run an organisation's Portava portal.
A discussion area is the hardest part of a portal to fake and the most valuable when it works. Members answering members is worth more than anything you could publish on the same subject.
Set up categories that match real conversations
Under Discussions in the admin area, create a small set of categories. Start with three or four that mirror what members actually talk about, such as a general one plus your community's big topics.
Too many categories fragments early conversation. You can add more when threads start crowding each other.
Seed before you announce
An empty forum stays empty. Nobody wants to be the first to talk in a silent room.
Before pointing members at it, start a few genuine threads yourself and ask two or three friendly members to reply or post their own. A page with visible conversation turns arrivals into participants.
Moderate lightly, visibly
The Moderation area collects reported posts and anything needing a decision. Most communities need very little intervention, but what little is needed matters.
Respond to reports quickly, remove what breaches your guidelines, and say why. A visible, even-handed decision teaches the norms better than a rulebook. Publish your community guidelines somewhere you can link to, so decisions never look invented on the spot.
Keep it alive
The admin habit that sustains discussion is participation rather than policing. Answer the unanswered thread, welcome the first-time poster, and turn great answers into resources in your library, with credit.
Members notice when the organisation is present in its own community.
